A senior Russian general has been declared dead following an detonation in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The incident happened on Monday morning when an IED concealed beneath a vehicle was set off, leading to the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' operational training department.

Authorities indicated that one theory under investigation points to the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has offered no public response.

Location of the Blast

Teams have been sent to the site, which is understood to be in a southerly district of the city.

Reports state the blast took place in a vehicle lot adjacent to a residential building.

History of Assaults

Since the beginning of the full-scale conflict in Ukraine, a number of Russian military officials have been subjected to assaults within Moscow.

This new event follows other notable incidents, for instance:

• General Yaroslav Moskalik was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow earlier this year.
• General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb hidden on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a informant previously attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are never officially confirmed as a matter of standard practice.

The conflict has witnessed clandestine operations reaching into the streets of the Russian capital.
