What's Inside the Case Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?
For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped in a realm of memories forged from the past of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in episode 6 forces them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a discovery that potentially carries the means to overcome him for good.
Spoiler Warning: The following reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.
The Discovery in the Tunnel
Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, it becomes clear she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a telescope taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a fight for life.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which transported a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the mine shaft was that very thief.
Unlocking the Mystery
Given what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would later pass on to the kids in Hawkins Lab.
Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it maintains the stability of the mirror dimension. The prequel shows that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing after half a day as a different person. From then on, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, much like how Will was controlled by the entity in an earlier season.
The Power of Fear
Henry's enduring terror of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between him and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to become stronger.
His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
